HARMONIZING REGIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION

University rankings stimulate harmonisation and competitiveness of regional higher education

ABSTRACT:
International university rankings have proliferated in recent years and have become very influential in Southeast Asia. These rankings influence not only prospective students but also policy makers. Rectors or Vice Chancellors study rankings closely and often adjust their policy to enhance competiveness of their university. Most rankings include or consist of indicators that assess research. However, efforts are being made to include metrics that relate to teaching and learning or to third missions. In this search for teaching, learning and third mission indicators involvement and input from university managers can help make better rankings, rankings that reflect the value of university for the society. Rankings, properly used, can serve as a practical tool in assessing and harmonizing development of higher education in different countries of Southeast Asia.
