TRANSNATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION AND 21st CENTURY EDUCATION
THE CHALLENGES OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ROLES IN A CHANGING WORLD
The international relations division is the core unit that strategizes on the internationalization efforts of Higher Education Institutions (HEI). The traditional key functions of the division include student exchange and mobility, international student marketing, strengthening partnership and also international student services. In the age of fourth industrial revolution and transformation towards 21st century education, the function of this division requires new approaches. There are new markets to explore, new technologies to embrace, new ways in promoting internationalization and new functions to create. This paper aims at understanding the challenges faced by this division today and looks at possible strategies in overcoming these challenges. It also suggests some new perspectives to diversify the international relations division, preparing itself towards new opportunities of a global presence. Six directors of international relations department among Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia were interviewed for this research. Among the key findings include the need for new strategies in dealing with the changing trends incorporating technology and the social media. There is also a need to restructure the department and revitalize the job functions of the team members to create more dynamics to the job scope.
